What Do Paper Invitations Really Cost in Canada and the United States?
In Canada and the United States, the card is only one part of the bill. Postage, envelopes, printing, and preparation add up quickly.

Paper invitations can be beautiful, but their true budget often goes beyond the printer’s price. To compare them fairly with digital invitations, count every step through the guest’s reply.
The first forgotten cost: postage
At publication time, Canada Post lists CA$1.44 for a single stamp on standard mail up to 30 g, or CA$1.24 per stamp in a booklet. Non-standard or oversize mail up to 100 g costs CA$2.61 to send. Rates are before tax and may change.
A square, thick, decorated, or multi-card invitation may therefore fall outside the standard category. Check its format and weight before setting the budget.

In the United States, format changes the bill too
At publication time, USPS lists an 82¢ Forever stamp for a First-Class Mail letter. That is US$41 for 50 envelopes or US$82 for 100, before printing and accessories.
Square, rigid, thick, or heavier invitations may require additional postage. As in Canada, budget for the actual envelope rather than only the base stamp.
The other lines in the budget
- Design services or purchase of a graphic template.
- Printing cards, RSVP cards, and additional information inserts.
- Envelopes, liners, labels, seals, or accessories.
- Reprints after a typo, date change, or added guest.
- Time spent collecting addresses, assembling, stamping, and mailing.
- Return envelope and second stamp when RSVPs come back by mail.
What digital removes from the equation
A digital invitation removes paper, envelopes, printing, and postage. Delivery pricing is shown by recipient count, and a correction can be made before confirmation without reprinting an entire batch.
It also reduces a less visible cost: tracking. Replies are tied to the guest list, avoiding the manual work of matching emails, messages, and RSVP cards.
Paper or digital: do you really have to choose?
Not necessarily. Some people reserve paper for close relatives who value a keepsake, then use digital delivery for most guests. Others choose a digital invitation and print only a few decorative copies for the event.
The right choice depends on your priorities: a physical keepsake, speed, budget, easy replies, or a combination of those goals.
Always compare the complete cost, not only the price of the card.
